Engine Carbon Clean

What is Carbon Cleaning?

Carbon cleaning as its name suggests is the removal of built-up carbon deposits from your engine & exhaust system. The build-up of carbon soot is caused from burning fuel in petrol & diesel cars. Most cars have emissions control devices such as catalysts or more commonly diesel particulate filters or DPF’s for short which reduce the amount of soot overall, but a significant amount of soot is deposited onto components in your engine bay and exhaust system. Vehicles fitted with advanced DPF components often require carbon cleaning more often than those that have basic or no DPF fitted.

How does Carbon Cleaning work?

There are a wide range of options when it comes to Carbon Cleaning with some methods being much more expensive ad time consuming than other cheaper faster alternatives. At Vault Performance after extensive research, we have utilized the most effective & efficient methods to clean your vehicle. An electric current is used to split water by electrolysis into its components, pure hydrogen and oxygen gases, commonly referred to as HHO, this process utilizes deionized water (purified water) rather than tap water for the most effective results. To allow electric current to flow easily an electrolyte (potassium hydroxide, KOH) is added to the water. The gases flow to a large bubbler filled with water which serves as a flashback arrestor.

The gases are highly effective in removing carbon deposits inside the engine using a simple procedure that requires no engine dismantling. The HHO gases are fed into the engines air intake while it idles since we do not need to dismantle the engine. The engine is left idling for approximately 40 mins however this is dependant on the engine size. During the process the vehicle is revved at regular intervals to clear out carbon which is being broken down by the oxygen enrichment & hydrogen accelerant combination and then pushed out of the exhaust system for a simple and effective method. Our Carbon Cleaning machinery is completely mobile which makes it easier for us to come to you.

Why should I get a Carbon Clean?
Carbon soot build up can affect a vehicles performance due to clogging, which means the combustion is not as effective or efficient, clearing the carbon deposits helps your vehicle regain lost performance, a carbon clean does not add additional performance and is not a modification to your vehicle. If your car starts to feel sluggish or unresponsive getting a carbon clean can certainly help if you have a build-up of carbon. Carbon build ups can also trigger warning lights on your dashboard and more commonly cause your car to fail its emissions test when in for a MOT.

Improved MPG is also a common benefit with around a 9% increase in MPG, we have found with our consumers due to carbon build ups making combustion more difficult and less efficient.

When should I get a Carbon Clean?

Carbon cleaning is dependent on a few factors such as how the vehicle has been driven, how well it is being maintained & the type of vehicle i.e., a petrol hatchback & a diesel large goods vehicle would have different amounts of carbon build up with larger vehicles usually producing more carbon soot. Therefore, considering the factors above on average we have estimated 15,000 miles to be the amount of mileage covered before a vehicle starts to feel the effects from carbon build up and it is at this point where we would recommend a clean.

Petrol cars are usually less susceptible to clogging, as petrol is superior at cleaning the components of a vehicle as it passes through unlike a diesel engine. However modern petrol vehicle engines are now GDI engines or Gasoline Direct Injection which means petrol is squirted directly to the combustion chamber, skipping over many parts meanings they will be left uncleaned & build up carbon quickly. Unfortunately, GDI engines are more common now & have developed a reputation for becoming clogged.

Diesels are less effective at burning fuel leading to more issues than its petrol counterpart. As a result of this exhaust gases are often fed back into the combustion chamber to be burned twice, this means there is a build-up of sooty fumes which is bound to build-up deposits over time. Once the fuel is burned for a 2nd time they still need to pass through the particulate filter & a catalyst meaning a build-up carbon can occur here as well.

The Benefits

Apart from the technical advantages such as the cleaning of EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation), sticky turbo inlet valves,( Diesel Particulate Filter) DPF removal of carbon deposits and no blocking of TWC (Three-Way Catalytic Converter) other benefits include: More responsive, Potential fuel savings, Smoother performance, Less vibrations, Restored power, Enhanced driving experience, Restored torque, Lower emissions.

At Vault Performance we take staff & consumer safety very seriously and so follow a strict set of requirements when carrying out work during these tough times. Our staff follow covid guidelines respecting the 2m separation gap with the consumer and also wearing face masks/shields along with gloves when carrying out their work. Hand sanitiser is available to staff & consumers on site.

During a mobile service we do not require the consumer to be in the vehicle for revving and keeping the engine in an idle state as we have specialist equipment for this in order to reduce interactions with the consumer. As a result of this our technicians may ask the consumer to respect the 2m distance whilst this work is being carried out. The consumer may watch or wait at a distance for staff to carry out their work.

FAQ Carbon Cleaning

Is carbon cleaning a modification?
No carbon cleaning is not a modification; it is an engine cleaning service. The whole service is totally safe and therefore would not invalidate your warranty on the vehicle.

Do you offer a warranty with carbon cleaning?
No, as this is a service where there are no physical parts, we do not offer warranty as it is also an irreversible process. Vault Performance are not responsible for damage to the vehicle before, during or after the process is complete. An active diagnostic test is done before we carry out this service to determine if the vehicle is in good ‘health’ before we start, at this point we maty refuse service if we believe the car is ‘unhealthy’.

Does carbon cleaning improve my performance or MPG?
In most cases yes, however we cannot guarantee that the process will be less or more effective on your vehicle. In most cases customers have felt the difference from before and after a carbon clean.

Is it the electrolyte (KOH) harmful to the engine?
No. The electrolyte stays in the system and only pure oxygen and hydrogen gases are fed into the air intake of the vehicle. These gases also pass through a bubbler of clean water to remove any traces of electrolyte.

Won’t using water cause harm to my engine?

No because the temperatures are too high to allow condensation of the vapour and water vapour is a normal product of combustion anyway, so engines are designed to handle it. It passes out safely as high temperature steam.

What vehicles can you do?
We specialise in cars; vans & motorcycles however are not limited to these. For more details, please contact us.

How long does it take?

This is dependent on the service chosen as well as the engine size. However, an estimation of 40-45 minutes is what we experience on average.

What area coverage do you offer?
Our mobile service covers a 30-mile radius for a free callout to you, thereafter can be discussed when you contact us. You can also drive to our premises if you choose.

Why do we use Deionized water over regular tap water?

Due to the added minerals & chemicals in regular water we have found that although it is effective it has yielded fewer effective results when compared to deionized water which is much more consistent.

I drive a Hybrid does it require a carbon clean?

Yes. Hybrid technology and vehicles which use Stop-Go systems to save fuel are inherently prone to carbon build up and will generally develop more carbon deposits than other vehicles with similar mileage. However, hybrids overall do not build up carbon as much as a petrol or diesel car meaning they do not require a clean as often as these vehicles.

What can I do to maintain my vehicle after a carbon clean?
Using higher grades of fuel can significantly reduce the build -up of carbon. Cheaper fuels and especially bio fuels have more additives that contribute to carbon build ups more than higher quality fuels.
